Evienne isn’t in the throne room when we meet up with my friends.

I don’t know why it surprises me, of course she wouldn’t be. She must be with her council, though, for the life of me I can’t think where they would be.

I glance over at Petal, Willow, and Jessamine who are staring wide-eyed at the three giant men standing behind me. Lazuli’s face wrinkled up in disgust from where he leans against the doorway.

“There’s a room for meetings,” Jessamine says, clearing her throat as she steps forward. “Follow me.”

Jessamine leads the way through the halls until we come to a door so wholly unremarkable that I think she must be mistaken.

Surely the door to a room use for the court’s council meetings would be far more elaborate to mark the sheer importance of it.

I pause to stare at the door before moving to open it.

Knocking seems like a waste of time, but as I step into the room, I realize that perhaps I should have.

Evienne is sitting at the head of a large oak table, with half a dozen other Fae surrounding her. All eyes fall on me and the others as I come to a standstill.

“Scarlett, is everything alright?” Evienne asks, standing as her eyes flicker to the men behind me as guards suddenly appear behind us, the spears trained on the shifters.

“Yes, wait, please just let me explain.”

Evienne nods, but the guards don’t lower their spears.

Taking a breath to steady myself, I lay out the plan.

She frowns as she listens.

I knew coming here would mean there’s a possibility that she would disagree with me, that she would insist that she and her council be included in the planning …

As I finish speaking, I prepare for Evienne to shoot everything down, but she surprises me by sighing and taking her set.

“I don’t like it,” she says, my heart twisting in my chest at her words and the torment in her eyes, “but I suppose there really is no other way. We’ve discussed the issue at length, and were nearly at the point of drawing the same conclusion.”

“Then it’s settled?” I ask.

“Yes, I suppose it is,” she says. “Prepare yourself to return to your father’s house. There’s no time to waste, we have little enough as it is to accomplish what must be done.”

At these words, my friends step forward.

Each of them hugs me in turn, and I can’t help noticing the tears in my friend’s eyes match my own as I squeeze them.

“This won’t be goodbye,” I whisper to each of them.

I will return, triumphant or not, I will come back.

This is my home, and nothing, not even my father … or Aspen, will keep me from it.

Besides, I made a promise to Evienne that she won’t lose me as she’s lost everyone else close to her, and I intend to keep that promise.

“You are the strongest being I know,” Jessamine says, wiping at her eyes. “Don’t you ever forget that.”

“Come back to us in one piece,” Lazuli
